StopeTaxes.com has previously reported on the attempt by North Carolina lawmakers to tax music, movies, books, and ringtones, and virtually all other digital goods.

These bills, House Bill 558 and Senate Bill 487, now sit in the House and Senate Finance Committees awaiting consideration. According to senior officials in NC, those bills appear unlikely to move this year or any time soon. It appears that some lawmakers recognize the adverse effect a tax on digital goods would have on North Carolina's vital high tech sector and taxpayers alike.

However, the threat of a new tax on digital goods in the Old North State remains high. The budget plan released by the Senate, if approved, would apply the state's sales tax to digital products.

The budget debate in North Carolina is likely to continue well into the summer, possibly until late July.
