Another front has opened up in the fight to keep the internet free of cumbersome taxes. Federal lawmakers are expected to introduce a bill in the coming weeks that will abolish the "physical nexus" requirement and allow all online retailers to collect etaxes in the 23 states that are part of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project. One study says the bill would allow states to collect up to $52 billion in new taxes over the next six years - a monumental tax increase on consumers.
The legislation would essentially nullify the U.S. Supreme Court's rightly decided case Quill v. North Dakota and violate the interstate commerce clause. The court's ruling prevented states from requiring companies to collect a sales and use tax if they had neither property or employees in the state.
